Resumo: In this article I analize some of the implications brought about by the centrality that cell phones have acquired in daily life. Assuming as a premiss the increasing relationship between culture and consumption in contemporaneity, I reflect upon the theme by priviledging a theoretical framework of consumption as communication. Such a framework favours the social agents’ vision regarding their own practices. In this sense, and departing from the relations between cell phones and consumer culture, I present the findings of recent ethnographic research on the topic, developed recently in various parts of the world. Finally, I present data from my own fielwork. The analysis of the data points, among other changes, to the important role played by cell phones in the symbolic inclusion of individuals – especially the young – in the cultural logic characteristic of contemporaneity: instantaneous, mobile and virtual.

Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul2008-12-22info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://seer.ufrgs.br/index.php/intexto/article/view/3457Intexto; No. 17 (2007)Intexto; Núm. 17 (2007)Intexto; No. 17 (2007)Intexto; N. 17 (2007)Intexto; n. 17 (2007)1807-8583reponame:Intexto (Porto Alegre)instname:Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS)instacron:UFRGSporhttps://seer.ufrgs.br/index.php/intexto/article/view/3457/4131da Silva, Sandra Rúbiainfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess2018-03-07T13:55:07Zoai:seer.ufrgs.br:article/3457Revistahttp://seer.ufrgs.br/intextoONGhttp://seer.ufrgs.br/intexto/oai||intexto@ufrgs.br1807-85831807-8583opendoar:2018-03-07T13:55:07Intexto (Porto Alegre) - Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS)false
