Resumo: This article presents the profile of municipal teachers andidentifies aspects that, according to them, should guide the continuing education processes. The survey was developed with 533 public school teachers from 10 municipalities of the State of São Paulo. The methodological approach used was quantitative, of the descriptive survey type. We used aquestionnaire to collect empirical data and content analysis to categorize the information. We found significant aspects that can guide continuing education policy proposals, based on the teachers’ needs and expectations, trying to articulate theory and practice. These aspects are relevant for theeffective fulfilling of the continuing education role.

A pesquisa desenvolveu-se junto a 533 professores de escolas públicas de 10 municípios do Estado de São Paulo. A abordagem metodológica foi quantitativa, do tipo survey descritivo. Usamos um questionário para coleta dos dados empíricos e a análise de conteúdo para categorização das informações. Constatamos aspectos significativos que podem nortear propostas de políticas de formação contínua, partindo das necessidades e expectativas docentes, procurando articular a teoria e a prática.
