Maternal mortality is defined as all deaths that occur during a pregnancy or after 42 days of pregnancy, regardless of the location or duration of pregnancy and can occur due to any cause related to the worsening of pregnancy. Accidental or incidental causes are excluded and can be classified in direct and indirect cause. This study aims to present data regarding the incidence of maternal mortality in the state of Sergipe between the years 2016 and 2020. The study population was composed of information regarding maternal mortality obtained through the official website of the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS), using the Mortality Information System (SIM) and from the data collected, the total of 98 maternal deaths were identified in the period. With this, the study allowed to characterize the women who died from obstetric causes in the state, highlighting indicators such as: age range; race/color; place of occurrence; type of obstetric cause. However, most maternal deaths are preventable, since health care solutions to prevent or manage complications are well known. Preventive measures should begin with the implementation of family planning, with guidance and contraceptive methods available to all who need them, as a way to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies and consequently the practice of abortion, in addition to a health team committed to assistance and specific health care that contributes to the early identification of situations that may translate risk for death.
