Resumo: | William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, in 1564, and died in the same city in 1616, being considered the greatest dramatist in world literature, whose dramatic work is divided into three big genres: tragedies, comedies and historical plays. In Brazil, in the nineteenth century, Shakespeare's work was received and accepted with appreciation by readers, critics, playwrights and writers who, in turn, appropriated unforgettable passages, citing them in their productions. This research is linked to a comparative literature and aims to show an overview of the quotations to the English dramatist that are observed in the work of Álvares de Azevedo (1831 - 1852), poet of the second Brazilian romantic generation, in order to report them to the themes addressed by the young writer, discovering why and for what they were mentioned in their texts. Furthermore, it is intended to discuss how the azevedian season of Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Othello, King Lear, The Merchant of Venice, 1 Henry IV, III Henry VI and Henry VIII quoted in Lira dos vinte anos, Poesias diversas, O poema do Frade, O Conde Lopo, Noite na taverna, O livro de Fra. Gondicário, Estudos literários e Discursos give emphasis, meaning, significance, drama, and aesthetic value to azevedian writings. Furthermore, scholars who have noticed the presence of the English in the romantic poet are genius, such as Gomes (1961), Prado (1996), Assis (2000), Cândido (2000), Monteiro (2000), Romero (2000), Stegagno-Picchio (2000) and Amaral (2006), whose aforementioned authors did not go into detail, so this work aims to explain this abandoned subject in more detail. From a qualitative analysis, several texts were analyzed, looking for similarities and contrasts between the authors, verifying how the azevedian assimilation occurred. However, this corpus does not attempt to scan all allusions to the work of the renaissance playwright, as some are well camouflaged, making it possible to consider them in later projects. Thus, the most explicit mentions are presented, such as direct quotes from verses, indirect quotes from scenes and characters. |

Thus, the most explicit mentions are presented, such as direct quotes from verses, indirect quotes from scenes and characters.
