Pandemic, meatpacking labor and culture of rights

The article aims to analyze the meanings attributed by unionists and mediators of the Law to mobilization for health rights in the meatpacking industry in Brazil, especially in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, during the year 2020, in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic. The meatpacking industry, due to the characteristics of its production line, was especially vulnerable to contamination by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. In Brazil, the outbreak of the pandemic coincided with a process of intense deregulation of work, intensified by a labor reform in 2017 that profoundly changed labor relations. In the midst of this moment of sanitary collapse, deregulation and intensification of work, unions and Labor Prosecutors tried to put limits on the growing risk experienced by workers on the production line, seeking to establish and regulate routines such as the use of masks, testing, distancing between workers. The article analyzes the meanings attributed by these subjects to the moment of intense pressure in which they were protagonists, understanding them from a historical perspective, as part of a long-term process, which deeply involved unions and also the MPT in the defense of a culture of rights built throughout the 20th century in Brazil.
