Resumo: This paper discusses the implications of choosing a specific target audience – the translator – to the terminological work in a specific area of knowledge: cooking. After a brief introduction to the problem discussed in the article, the theoretical models used in our research are presented and contrasted, in order to highlight their relevance for the methodology used in this work. The analysis focuses on the semantic subclasses of the ingredients. Departing from the proposed domain tree, we analyze the definitions and concepts of the semantic field "tempero(s)” (seasonings). The resulting data points out to the need of considering, instead of the classic categories commonly used to separate generic traits from specific (defined dichotomically as positive or negative), a semic structure that is fluid and permeable on its periphery, representing a continuum of meaning that goes from the most prototypical (core) semic traits to the least prototypical (margins) – on a given area of expertise and taking into account a specific target audience.
