Resumo: This paper investigates the high school teacher, trying to identify the specificities of this professional category regarding the training and working conditions. It results from qualitative research, developed in a public school of the state network, on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. Questionnaires were applied to 69 teachers and interviews were conducted, as well as field observations. Dialogue with national and international research on high school and training (Oliveira, Costa, Kuenzer, Gatti, Dubet, Nóvoa and Formosinho). The text is structured in three parts: Working Conditions_a framework of intensification; Gender relations and length of service_ the “tension” between heterogeneous groups; Teacher education_ multiple influences and representations. It is concluded that the working conditions and training of these teachers need to be rethought, to overcome the own organizational and temporal logic of high school and the expected professional status, aiming at the professional development of this teaching category.

Es el resultado de una investigación cualitativa, desarrollada en una escuela pública de la red estatal, en las afueras de Río de Janeiro. Se aplicaron cuestionarios a 69 maestros y se realizaron entrevistas, así como observaciones de campo. Diálogo con investigaciones nacionales e internacionales sobre la escuela secundaria y la formación (Oliveira, Costa, Kuenzer, Gatti, Dubet, Nóvoa y Formosinho). El texto está estructurado en tres partes: Condiciones de trabajo: un marco de intensificación; Relaciones de género y duración del servicio: la "tensión" entre grupos heterogéneos; Formación docente_ múltiples influencias y representaciones. Se concluye que es necesario repensar las condiciones de trabajo y la capacitación de estos docentes para superar la lógica organizativa y temporal propia de la escuela secundaria y el estatus profesional esperado, con el objetivo de desarrollar profesionalmente esta categoría de enseñanza.Este trabalho investiga o professor de ensino médio, procurando identificar as especificidades dessa categoria profissional quanto à formação e às condições de trabalho. Resulta de pesquisa qualitativa, desenvolvida em uma escola pública da rede estadual, na periferia do Rio de Janeiro. Foram aplicados questionários a 69 professores e realizadas entrevistas, além de observações do campo. Dialoga com pesquisas nacionais e internacionais sobre o ensino médio e a formação (Oliveira, Costa, Kuenzer, Gatti, Dubet, Nóvoa e Formosinho). O texto se estrutura em três partes: Condições de trabalho_um quadro de intensificação; Relações de gênero e tempo de serviço_a “tensão” entre grupos heterogêneos; Formação dos professores_múltiplas influências e representações.
