This article describes some theoretical and methodological approaches to the current study of everydayargumentation. It is divided into four main sections followed by a discussion. The first section looks at two major ways argumenthas been defined in argumentation theory and research. The second section takes a brief look at some theoretical approacheswhich have prevailed in historic and contemporary argumentation studies. The third section focuses on the various perspectivesargumentation studies have taken. Four elements are emphasized here: the corpus of data analyzed, the research settingsinvestigated, the descriptive objectives, and the analytical methods adopted. The final section summarizes some findings fromempirical studies on people's argumentative skills.
