INTELLIGENCE AND LEARNING:: FROM THE INTERCORRELATIONS TO THEIR PROMOTION

Resumo: Traditionally, psychological research takes intelligence asan internai and abstract capacity of the mind, and its relationship with theschool achievement in a linear way, e.g. from the intelligence to theperformance. The cognitive styles and the theories of socio-cognitivedimensions provide some examples of the importance of introducing cognitive strategies as well as personal factors on the explaining ofcognitive functioning. Both these aspects, as well as the knowledge ofthe school learning impact on intelligence, allow us to deffend apedagogical and a psychological practice in the schools in order topromote students cognitive development. Finally, the author describes thetheoretical basis, the structure, the activities and the procedures of aprogram for the cognitive training applied in Portugal with 7th to 9th gradesstudents.

As teorias sobre os estilos cognitivos e as variáveis sócio-cognitivas do desempenho, ilustram-nos a importância das estratégias cognitivas e das variáveis pessoais na explicação do funcionamento cognitivo. Estes aspectos, assim como o conhecimento do próprio impacto das aprendizagens escolares na inteligência, permitem-nos defender uma prática pedagógica e uma prática psicológica mais orientadas para a promoção do desenvolvimento cognitivo dos alunos.
