Resumo: Seeking to understand the initial spread of the Modern Mathematics Movement in Brazil and Portugal, the article presents a comparative historical study of the practices of appropriation of the movement by two renowned mathematics educators, recognized as pioneers in the modernization of mathematics in secondary school: Osvaldo Sangiorgi in Brazil, and José Sebastião e Silva, Portugal. The sources are composed of the didactics production of the respective disseminators of the movement, in the 1960s: modern mathematics textbooks of mathematics and teacher guides. The theoretical and methodological basis is based on the theoretical contribution of Michel de Certeau, Roger Chartier, Dominique Julia and Marcel Detienne. The study highlights the importance of cultural uniqueness in the construction of mediators of the comparative history of the Modern Mathematics Movement. Keywords: History of Mathematics Education. Movement of Modern Mathematics. Practices of Appropriation. Comparative study history.
