Intervention using exergames: effects on the executive functions of school-aged children

Resumo: Because of its interface, the practice of exergames includes motor skills that involve a wide range of sensory feedback, adjustable range of motion, speed and accuracy levels, as well as a variety of cognitive and motor tasks. Thus, the association of the use of exergames with cognitive issues has been verified. This is an experimental study with intervention with a prospective longitudinal follow-up period of two months, controlled and double-blind. 64 school children between 8 and 10 years old were randomly assigned to an experimental (n = 25) and control group (n = 23). The experimental group, always monitored by two researchers, experienced a protocol consisting of exergames in 18 sessions of 20 and 30 minutes, replacing some curricular physical education classes. In the pre and post-tests a socio-demographic questionnaire was used, the Test of Concentrated Attention d2, Trail Making Test and the institutional school performance. Intervention, in general, did not influence the cognitive variables evaluated in the two homogeneous groups; however, age-sex interactions were found for the variable executive function related to cognitive flexibility, indicating a positive effect of the intervention for boys with age of 10 years.

Así se han verificado la asociación del uso de los exerges con cuestiones cognitivas. Este es un estudio experimental con intervención con un período de seguimiento longitudinal prospectivo de dos meses, controlado y doble ciego. 64 niños de entre 8 y 10 años fueron distribuidos de forma aleatoria en grupo experimental (n = 25) y control (n = 23). El Grupo experimental, siempre monitoreado por dos investigadores, experimentó un protocolo constituido por los exerges en 18 sesiones de 20 y 30 minutos en sustitución a algunas clases de educación física curriculares. En el pre y post tests se utilizó un cuestionario socio demográfico, el Test de Atención Concentrada d2 el Test de Pistas y el desempeño escolar institucional. La intervención de forma general no tuvo influencia en las variables cognitivas evaluadas en los dos grupos homogéneos, sin embargo, se encontraron interacciones entre edad y sexo para la variable función ejecutiva relacionada con la flexibilidad cognitiva, indicando un efecto positivo de la intervención para los niños con la edad de 10 años.Em virtude da sua interface, a prática de exergames inclui habilidades motoras que envolvem uma ampla gama de feedback sensorial, amplitudes de movimento ajustáveis, níveis de velocidade e precisão, e também uma variedade de tarefas cognitivas e motoras. Assim sendo têm se verificado a associação do uso dos exergames com questões cognitivas. Este é um estudo experimental com intervenção com um período de acompanhamento longitudinal prospectivo de dois meses, controlado e duplo-cego. 64 crianças escolares entre 8 e 10 anos foram distribuídos de forma randomizada em grupo experimental (n=25) e controle (n=23). O Grupo experimental, sempre monitorado por dois pesquisadores, vivenciou um protocolo constituído pelos exergames em 18 sessões de 20 e 30 minutos em substituição a algumas aulas de educação física curriculares.
