Resumo: | The aim of this paper is to consider a study group in mathematicseducation as an environment for supporting teacher’s professional developmentand discussing possible ways of its implementation at school. The discussiondraws on data from a group of ten primary school teachers from a São Paulo state school who wanted to study "the why(s) and wherefore(s)" of the decimalsystem and the four fundamental operations: addition, subtraction,multiplication and division, which they considered a difficult content to betaught. The results show that participation in the study group contributed to abetter understanding among the teachers of the following issues: mathematics issomething which can be constructed; the importance of learning history ofmathematics; how to use manipulative didactical material; the students’learning process; and the teaching knowledge as something to be continuallyconstructed. |

Este texto trata de grupos de estudos como espaço de formação continuada de professores e apresenta possíveis formas de sua implementação no ambiente escolar. A discussão é baseada em uma pesquisa realizada com dez professoras que lecionam em uma escola da rede pública do Estado de São Paulo e queriam compreender as idéias matemáticas relacionadas ao sistema de numeração decimal e às operações fundamentais. A participação no grupo contribuiu para a compreensão de vários aspectos relacionados ao ensino do tópico escolhido. Discutiram sobre a constituição de um sistema de numeração, incluindo o significado de base, a necessidade de símbolos e regras. Aspectos históricos também foram contemplados para ajudar na compreensão do processo de construção do conhecimento matemático. Além disso, as participantes discutiram o uso de materiais manipuláveis, as dificuldades dos alunos com o tema e a importância de um grupo de estudos para auxiliá-las na condução da docência. Finalizamos com considerações sobre a necessidade de mais investigações para operacionalização no âmbito das escolas.
