Personal finance: the influence of finance disciplines on the financial behavior of business administration students at a public university

Resumo: Financial Education provides citizens with the necessary knowledge about personal finances to make more assertive financial decisions. Thus, the present study aimed to analyze whether the finance disciplines studied during the Administration course at a Public University located in the Midwest of Minas Gerais influenced the financial behavior of students. For this purpose, descriptive research was carried out, with a qualitative and quantitative approach, using the case study. It was observed that the students who participated in the research were mostly female, single, had already entered the job market, were between nineteen and twenty-four years old and had a monthly income between R$1,101.00 and R$2,950.00. The results indicated that the Personal Finance content was not part of the syllabus of the Finance disciplines offered by the course. However, the theme was treated through the complementary activities developed in the disciplines. Thus, it can be seen that the hypothesis raised that finance disciplines contributed to students having a more conscious financial behavior was validated.

Así, se realizó una investigación descriptiva, con enfoque cualitativo y cuantitativo, utilizando el estudio de caso. Se observó que los estudiantes que participaron de la investigación eran en su mayoría del sexo femenino, solteros, habían ingresado al mercado laboral, tenían entre diecinueve y veinticuatro años y poseían una renta mensual entre R$ 1.101,00 y R$ 2.950,00. Los resultados indicaron que el contenido de Finanzas Personales no formaba parte del plan de estudios de las disciplinas de Finanzas que ofrece el curso. Sin embargo, el tema fue tratado a través de las actividades complementarias desarrolladas en las disciplinas. Así, se puede apreciar que se validó la hipótesis planteada de que las disciplinas financieras contribuyeron a que los estudiantes tuvieran un comportamiento financiero más consciente.Este estudo teve como finalidade analisar se as disciplinas de finanças estudadas durante o curso de Administração de uma Universidade Pública do centro-oeste mineiro, influenciavam o comportamento financeiro dos estudantes. Assim, foi realizada uma pesquisa descritiva, com abordagem qualitativa e quantitativa, utilizando-se o estudo de caso.  Observou-se que os estudantes que participaram da pesquisa eram, majoritariamente, do gênero feminino, solteiros, haviam ingressado no mercado de trabalho, tinham entre dezenove e vinte e quatro anos e uma renda mensal entre R$1.101,00 a R$2.950,00. Os resultados indicaram que o conteúdo de Finanças Pessoais não fazia parte das ementas das disciplinas de Finanças oferecidas pelo curso. Porém, o tema era tratado através das atividades complementares desenvolvidas nas disciplinas.
