Deaf Culture in Museums: the Place of Speech in Deaf Mediation

Resumo: | In Brazil, the number of deaf people who act as educators and mediators is very small. The hypothesis raised by this article is that the mediation between deaf educator and deaf public is fundamental. When the deaf person is assisted by a hearing person, even if he knows how to communicate in Libras (Brazilian Sign Language), the mediation is incomplete because many communication codes are lost in the interaction and the interpreter of Libras listener does not fully master the vocabulary necessary to pass on the information, the thought, the abstractions, the feeling among other specificities that only the member of the deaf culture knows. To develop this hypothesis, the article brings three case studies: (1) the participation of deaf people in the naming of works in Libras by the sculptor Aleijadinho in the city of Congonhas, in Minas Gerais, (2) the elaboration of the video guide of the Pinacoteca Museum in the city of São Paulo and (3) the Museum of Deaf History, Arts and Culture and the William J. Marra Museum in the city of Olathe, Kansas, USA, which has been dedicated exclusively to Deaf Culture since 2001. |

La hipótesis que plantea este artículo es que la mediación entre el educador sordo y el público sordo es fundamental. Cuando la persona sorda es asistida por una persona oyente, aunque sepa comunicarse en Libras (Lengua de Signos Brasileña), la mediación es incompleta porque muchos códigos de comunicación se pierden en la interacción y el intérprete de Libras oyente no domina completamente el vocabulario necesario para transmitir la información, el pensamiento, las abstracciones, el sentimiento entre otras especificidades que sólo conoce el miembro de la cultura sorda. Para desarrollar esta hipótesis, el artículo trae tres estudios de caso: (1) la participación de personas sordas en el naming de obras en Libras del escultor Aleijadinho en la ciudad de Congonhas, en Minas Gerais, (2) la elaboración de la videoguía del Museo Pinacoteca en la ciudad de São Paulo y (3) el Museo de Historia, Arte y Cultura Sorda y el Museo William J. Marra en la ciudad de Olathe, Kansas, EE. UU., que se dedica exclusivamente a la Cultura Sorda desde 2001.O objetivo deste artigo é expor a importância do protagonismo surdo em museus. No Brasil, o número de pessoas surdas que atuam como educadoras e mediadoras é muito pequeno. A hipótese levantada por esse artigo é que a mediação entre educador surdo e público surdo é fundamental. Quando o surdo é atendido por um ouvinte, mesmo que este saiba se comunicar em Libras (Língua Brasileira de Sinais), a mediação fica incompleta pois muitos códigos da comunicação se perdem na interação e o intérprete de Libras ouvinte não domina totalmente o vocabulário necessário para repassar as informações, o pensamento, as abstrações, o sentimento entre outras especificidades que só o membro da cultura surda conhece. Para desenvolver essa hipótese o artigo traz três estudos de caso: (1) a participação de surdos na nomeação das obras em Libras do escultor Aleijadinho na cidade de Congonhas, em Minas Gerais, (2) a elaboração do videoguia do Museu Pinacoteca na cidade de São Paulo e (3) o Museum of Deaf History, Arts and Culture and the William J.
