Is there a quality difference between face-to-face and distance education?

Resumo: In recent years, the expansion of higher education in Brazil has been based on the distance-education modality, especially in private, for-profit institutions. Considering that distance-education students generally belong to lower socioeconomic groups, analyzing this modality is fundamental in order to assess the equity of the system. Thus, in this paper, using the National Examination of Student Performance (Exame Nacional de Desempenho dos Estudantes, Enade) database, I checked whether there are any differences in performance between the face-to-face and distance modalities. Through logical deduction between school effectiveness theory and comparisons of Enade averages, I have tried to demonstrate that face-to-face courses tend to provide better learning. In a context of unequal access and profiles, it is possible to deduce that the expansion of distance-education is reinforcing the iniquity of the system.

Como los estudiantes de educación a distancia generalmente pertenecen a grupos de menor estatus socioeconómico, analizar esta modalidad es fundamental para evaluar la equidad del sistema. Así, en este artículo, utilizando la base de datos del Examen Nacional de Desempeño de los estudiantes (Enade), se buscó verificar si existen diferencias en el desempeño entre las modalidades presencial y a distancia. Por medio de la deducción lógica entre la teoría de la efectividad escolar y comparaciones de los promedios de Enade, se trató de demostrar que los cursos presenciales tienden a proporcionar mejores condiciones de aprendizaje. En un contexto de acceso y perfil desigual, se puede deducir que la expansión de EAD está reforzando la iniquidad del sistema.Ces dernières années, l’expansion de l’enseignement supérieur brésilien s’est basée sur l’enseignement à distance, en particulier dans les établissements privés à but lucratif. Étant donné que les étudiants de l’enseignement à distance (EaD) appartiennent en général à des groupes de niveau socio-économique plus faible, l’analyse de cette modalité est fondamentale pour évaluer l’équité du système. Cet article a cherché à vérifier s’il existe des différences de performance entre les modalités présentielle et à distance, appuyé sur la base de données de l’Examen National de Performance des Étudiants (Enade). Par déduction logique entre la théorie de l’efficacité éducative et des comparaisons concernant les moyennes de l’Enade, nous avons voulu démontrer que les cours en présentiel ont tendance à offrir de meilleures conditions d’apprentissage. Dans un contexte d’accès et de profil inégal, il est possible de déduire que l’expansion de l’enseignement à distance renforce l’iniquité du système.Nos últimos anos, a expansão da educação superior brasileira tem se baseado na modalidade a distância, especialmente em instituições privadas com fins de lucro.
