Theatre Translators as Creative, Political, and Artistic Actors

Resumo: This special issue, titled "Theatre translators", brings together essays that approach various of the forms in which theatre translators exert their agency in the theatre, both in Brazil and internationally. Far from exhausting this discussion, this issue illustrates how theatre translators are not mere authors of translations that serve as raw material for publications, performances, or sur/side-titles for performances, but are very often part and parcel of the joint forces that collectively transform a dramatic text into a scenic spectacle, along with artistic directors, actors, set designers and so on. In this way, we argue that the essays that feature in this issue demonstrate, albeit at times not so explicitly, that the roles of the theatre translator are alike those of the dramaturge, according to Patrice Pavis’s definition of the term (2015).

Longe de pretender abarcar todas as possibilidades dessa atuação, este número temático ilustra que os tradutores de teatro não são apenas autores de textos que constituem pontos de partida para publicações, encenações ou legendas teatrais, mas que, muitas vezes, fazem parte do esforço coletivo de transformar um texto dramático em espetáculo cênico, junto com encenadores, atores e outros agentes criativos do teatro.
