Discussing problem solving and mathematical explorationinvestigation: reflections on the teaching of mathematics

Resumo: | Problem solving is a central theme when it comes to teaching mathematics at the variousschooling levels. In the Brazilian context, mathematical exploration-investigation, in turn, has become asubject of increasing interest among researchers and teachers of mathematics. However, these twoapproaches are presented from a variety of standpoints, allowing for new discussions and reflections.This paper analyzes the closeness as well as the distance between problem solving and mathematicalexploration-investigation, identifying their contributions to school mathematics. Taking as the object ofdiscussion the literature on mathematics education, such closeness or distance are outlined as thevarious understandings of the two approaches are discussed. The contributions to mathematicseducation depend on the possibilities generated in the classroom, and both problem solving and mathematical exploration-investigation can be promising for building up knowledge, but not forlearning something readymade and concluded. |

Por sua vez, a exploração-investigação matemática, no contexto brasileiro, tem despertado crescente interesse em pesquisadores e professores que ensinam Matemática. Contudo, tanto uma como outra são apresentadas sob diversos entendimentos e possibilidades, permitindo novas discussões e reflexões. Este artigo analisa aproximações e distanciamentos entre resolução de problemas e exploração-investigação matemática, apontando contribuições de ambas para a Matemática escolar. Tomando como objeto de discussão a literatura de educação matemática, tais aproximações ou distanciamentos são delineados à medida que são discutidos os diversos entendimentos para as duas abordagens.
