They were analyzed considering their sources combined with personal, contextual, educational, and teaching experience variables, as well as the professors' perceptions of their current teaching experience. This study follows a quantitative approach of a descriptive and correlational nature and is grounded in Social Cognitive Theory (SCT). Data were collected through three instruments: The Participant Characterization Questionnaire, the Brazilian University Professor Self-Efficacy Scale, and the Scale of Teacher Self-Efficacy Sources. Four hundred higher education professors participated in the study, comprising 153 males and 247 females from various private and public higher education institutions (IESs) in Brazil. The findings of this investigation partially align with the perspective of SCT and correlate with previous research in this domain. Participants displayed moderate to high self-efficacy scores across all presented factors, encompassing teaching, research, management, and extension. Notably, the highest self-efficacy score was observed in the teaching dimension, indicating that professors perceive themselves as more self-efficacious in this realm. Regarding the sources of self-efficacy, the results were consistent with prior studies and aligned with Bandura's (1997) proposed sources. Mastery and vicarious experience were strongly associated with self-efficacy for teaching and self-efficacy for management, showing no significant differences between them. For self-efficacy in research and extension, mastery experience, vicarious experience, and social persuasion emerged as the most influential sources. In terms of correlations with other variables, small but significant differences were identified related to sex, age, type of institution, hours dedicated to teaching, perception of administrative and peer support, and personal satisfaction. Additionally, there were significant differences of small to medium magnitude related to years of experience in higher education and employment status. Besides, there was a large and statistically significant difference for the variable "feel prepared to teach in higher education". It means that participants who declared themselves enough or much prepared to teach displayed higher scores in self-efficacy to teach and self-efficacy to guide research. Professors who revealed medium to high disposition to keep in the career also had large and statistical differences with self-efficacy to teach and to guide research. Notably, a substantial and statistically significant difference emerged in the variable "feeling prepared to teach in higher education". Participants who indicated feeling sufficiently or highly prepared to teach exhibited higher self-efficacy scores in teaching and research. Professors with a medium to high inclination to remain in their careers also demonstrated significant differences in self-efficacy in teaching and research. In conclusion, this study suggests the need for further research that explores shared and distinct aspects compared to similar investigations. Such studies can inform the development of intervention strategies to enhance self-efficacy beliefs in the four dimensions examined in this research: teaching, research, management, and extensionAbertoDoutoradoEducaçãoDoutor em Educação[s.n.]Polydoro, Soely Aparecida Jorge, 1966-Fior, Camila AlvesCosta Filho, Roraima Alves daBzuneck, José AloyseoPirola, Nelson AntonioUniversidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP).
