Learning strategies used by Brazilian university students: a literature review

Resumo: Academic success is the result of several variables that influence learning. One of these variables is the learning strategies used by the student, which can be defined as cognitive, behavioral and/or, emotional conscious procedures that seek to improve the knowledge retention and recovery process. The present article sought to examine how the learning strategies used by Brazilian university students have been investigated in the literature. The review was carried out using descriptors related to the phenomenon of interest (learning strategies, metacognition and, self-regulation) together with the expression “university students”. Only empirical articles were selected whose participants were Brazilian. The research corpus consisted of 25 studies published between 2005 and 2020. In most articles, it was possible to observe the students’ preference for metacognitive, reading, planning and, social strategies. Finally, the use of cognitive and metacognitive techniques obtained a positive correlation with the motivation intrinsic to learning and with greater expression of self-efficacy. The knowledge of the learning strategies and their use is relevant for the elaboration of intervention programs aimed at the development of strategies that promote academic success. The relevance of this review is to present an overview of how the topic has been investigated.

Una de ellas son las estrategias de aprendizaje que utiliza el alumno, las cuales pueden definirse como procedimientos cognitivos, conductuales y/o emocionales conscientes que buscan mejorar el proceso de retención y recuperación de conocimientos. El presente artículo buscó examinar cómo las estrategias de aprendizaje utilizadas por los estudiantes universitarios brasileños han sido investigadas en la literatura. La revisión fue realizada utilizando descriptores relacionados con el fenómeno de interés (estrategias de aprendizaje, metacognición y autorregulación) junto con la expresión “estudiantes universitarios”. Solo se seleccionaron artículos empíricos cuyos participantes eran brasileños. El corpus de investigación estuvo conformado por 25 estudios publicados entre 2005 y 2020. En la mayoría de los artículos se pudo observar la preferencia de los estudiantes por estrategias metacognitivas, lectoras, de planificación y sociales. Finalmente, el uso de técnicas cognitivas y metacognitivas obtuvo una correlación positiva con la motivación intrínseca al aprendizaje y con una mayor expresión de autoeficacia. El conocimiento de las estrategias de aprendizaje y su uso es relevante para la elaboración de programas de intervención orientados al desarrollo de estrategias que favorezcan el éxito académico. La relevancia de esta revisión es presentar una descripción general de cómo se ha investigado el tema.O sucesso acadêmico depende de diversas variáveis que influenciam o aprendizado. O presente artigo buscou examinar como as estratégias de aprendizagem utilizadas por estudantes universitários brasileiros têm sido investigadas na literatura. A revisão foi realizada utilizando descritores relacionados ao fenômeno de interesse (estratégias de aprendizagem, metacognição e autorregulação) juntamente com a expressão “estudantes universitários”. Foram selecionados artigos empíricos cujos participantes eram brasileiros. O corpus da pesquisa foi composto por 25 estudos publicados entre 2005 e 2020. Na maioria dos artigos foi possível observar a preferência dos estudantes por estratégias metacognitivas, de leitura, de planejamento e sociais. Finalmente, a utilização das técnicas cognitivas e metacognitivas obteve correlação positiva com a motivação intrínseca ao aprendizado e com maior expressão de autoeficácia. O conhecimento das estratégias de aprendizagem e de seu uso é relevante para a elaboração de programas de intervenção voltados para o desenvolvimento de estratégias que favoreçam o sucesso acadêmico.
