Bullying and school performance: readings and understandings

This article, part of the research “School Violence: discrimination, bullying and responsibility”, aims to analyze teachers' understanding of bullying and, more specifically, to identify the profile of those involved in these actions (aggressors, victims and observers), as well as the relationship between violence (suffered and practiced) and school performance. The methodology used was of a qualitative nature and the data were collected through a semi-structured interview with teachers of Portuguese Language, Arts and Physical Education who work in the final years of elementary school. The survey results shows that teachers partially understand the bullying situation, identify the victims and the aggressors, but do not mention the observers who, in face of their role, need to be made visible. In turn, violence and school performance denote ambiguity in the face of the intellectual and the manifestation of official and unofficial hierarchies that materialize at school.
